Notably, spot Bitcoin ETFs have already absorbed 499,000 BTC in 2024 alone, while MicroStrategy, a major corporate Bitcoin holder, has secured 257,000 BTC. With more banks stepping in and sovereign funds joining the race, Standard Chartered analysts believe Bitcoin’s growth story is only beginning.
One of the most telling signs of this shift is the recent disclosure from Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund. The fund reported a 4,700 BTC equivalent investment in BlackRock’s IBIT ETF, reinforcing the notion that government-backed institutions are starting to see Bitcoin as a legitimate store of value.
Hedge Funds Drove Early ETF Adoption
The bank’s analysis points to a significant transition in Bitcoin ownership trends. While retail investors led the charge in Bitcoin’s early days, hedge funds dominated the initial ETF adoption phase. Now, sovereign entities are stepping in, and that change could dramatically alter Bitcoin’s stability and growth trajectory.
Geoffrey Kendrick, Standard Chartered’s head of digital assets research, identifies this as a defining moment. He predicts a gradual buyer evolution, moving from retail investors before ETFs to hedge funds in the early ETF phase and eventually to sovereign entities. He stated:

Hedge funds, led by firms like Brevan Howard, purchased the equivalent of 14,500 BTC in the fourth quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, major banks, including Goldman Sachs, have steadily increased their holdings, reflecting a growing confidence in the asset class.
Standard Chartered also anticipated $500,000 mark in early February, as mention in out previous analysis. Reaching $500K mark would require a staggering 433% gain from current levels of $93,720. That would push Bitcoin’s total market value to approximately $10 trillion, surpassing tech giants like Apple and Microsoft while bringing it to nearly half of gold’s $19.5 trillion market cap.
Regulatory Doors Open—Banks Can Now Hold Digital Assets
One of the key factors supporting Bitcoin’s path to institutional dominance is the changing regulatory landscape. The repeal of SAB 121, a U.S. regulatory rule that previously limited banks’ ability to hold digital assets, could pave the way for further institutional investments.
Additionally, the U.S. government’s own increasing Bitcoin reserves are sending strong signals to the market. With regulatory barriers easing and governments becoming more open to digital assets, many investors see Bitcoin moving from a speculative bet to a serious financial instrument.
Standard Chartered expects institutional Bitcoin buying to intensify in early 2025, with pension funds playing an increasingly significant role. Kendrick noted that state pension funds currently account for just 1% of Bitcoin ETF holdings—a number that could rise as more institutions seek diversification.
