Off The Grid (OTG), a cyberpunk-themed third person battle royale shooter created by a studio co-founded by “District 9” and “Chappie” film director Neill Blomkamp is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via the Epic Games Store. The independent game studio launched its GUNZ blockchain on the Avalanche subnet to deliver high performance and scalability.
On Avalanche’s official X account, it stated that Off The Grid aims to revolutionize the Battle Royale genre by emphasizing storytelling and digital ownership, enabling players to influence both gameplay and narrative through their in-game decisions. GUNZ seeks to establish one of the first player-friendly crypto-economies in the triple-A game, empowering players with complete ownership of their in-game items as NFTs. After launching early access on 10th October no official release date has been announced for Off the Grid, but it is expected to be released before the year ends.
Here’s How GUNZ Leverages Avalanche’s Capabilities
Avalanche, launched in September 2020, has transformed the blockchain landscape by providing near-instant transaction finality. Currently, Avalanche supports over 500 applications across various sectors, including finance, gaming, and NFTs. Avalanche is designed with a focus on sustainability, boasting a minimal climate impact compared to traditional blockchain platforms, which often consume large amounts of energy when processing transitions.
Avalanche’s consensus protocol is designed to enable the network to validate transactions faster than Ethereum. As a result, Avalanche can process over 4,500 transactions per second (TPS), which is crucial for a fast-paced game like OTG.
GUN is the official token of the GUNZ network, the token may be rewarded to a player by securing kills, finishing among the top players in a match, and also completing both weekly and daily challenges. Additionally, Gunzilla designed the network to be utilized by other developers, to make the GUN token a versatile currency for multiple games in the future, creating a sustainable, player-driven economy that benefits both players and developers.
When the GUNZ network launches its mainnet, players will be able to mint NFTs representing in-game items, which can be traded and sold on various marketplaces and within OTG. Furthermore, this feature allows players to own and monetize their assets. Avalanche is designed to scale easily, accommodating a large number of players simultaneously. This is particularly important when multiple players are interacting and competing in the game.
In March 2024 VanEck invested in Parallel, a Web3 card game in which tradable cards are represented on-chain as NFTs. VanEck’s private cryptocurrency fund made its second wager on Web3-enabled gaming on October 31 when it invested in Gunzilla Games.
These strategic investments highlight the growing interest in blockchain technology within the gaming sector, demonstrating how the integration of on-chain assets enhances player engagement and ownership, ultimately transforming the landscape of digital gaming.
