Last week, IOTA’s Layer-1 staging network Shimmer announced a major upgrade to the ShimmerEVM testnet.

The ShimmerEVM testnet chain is designed to be the initial smart contract chain on the Shimmer network that fully supports Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility. It offers enhanced scalability, speed, security, and the ability to process smart contracts in parallel.
The primary objective of this test chain is to enhance the robustness and efficiency of a public smart contract chain with multiple validators. By thoroughly testing and refining the system, it aims to ensure a smooth and reliable experience for users on the actual ShimmerEVM chain. Any identified bugs will be promptly addressed, resulting in an improved release of the final product.
Earlier this year on March 29, the IOTA developers introduced the ShimmerEVM testnet in preparation for the launch of the ShimmerEVM mainnet.
Progress in the Shimmer Ecosystem
In the latest development, the team behind IOTA/Shimmer is working in order to introduce an incentivization program for content creators. This will revolutionize the way content creators in the Shimmer ecosystem monetize their creations.
The content creator incentivization program from IOTA/Shimmer started July 1 onwards with the Tangle Community Treasury offering 446,150 SMR for this incentives program. This represents 10% of the total marketing and content budget of the Tangle Treasury.
Initially, for a period of six months, the Tangle Treasury will allocate a total of 74,358 SMR. However, if the program operates successfully, there will be an extension, after conducting a thorough review of the outcomes at the end of the six months period.

During the development of the IOTA core, the team of developers made a decision to combine the GoShimmer and Hornet teams in order to expedite the progress. Lead developer Hans Moog also mentioned that the developer team has been achieving positive results, as the IOTA core node is becoming fully operational.
Although stress testing has not yet commenced due to ongoing clean-up and refactoring of certain components, Hans Moog expressed surprise at the team’s ability to rewrite a significant portion of the node software within a relatively short period of time.
