- The IOTA Community Node Pool allows node operators in the IOTA network to earn a small reward in IOTA (MIOTA).
- The node pool is financed by donations, which are immediately distributed to the members according to a ranking system.
The IOTA community has come up with something to reward the operation of a node in the IOTA network. After CarriotaFields was discontinued, node operators can now register their node via the IOTA Community Node Pool and then earn a small amount of IOTA (MIOTA).
The project was created by five community members, whereby the funds to be distributed are financed by donations. The donation system itself is based on the IOTA payment module and distributes the donations to the members of the node pool immediately after receiving them. For that, the node pool uses a ranking system to determine the proportional distribution of the donations.
For each action a node performs within the pool, a score is awarded. For example, a maximum of 50 points is awarded for the “attachToTangle” command, 5 points for “broadcastTransactions” and 1 point for “getNodeInfo”, with the points being graded according to the time required.
Presumably every month a “season” will be finished and the points and the ranking will be set to zero. This gives new nodes the chance to get equal shares of the earnings. On the other hand, this prevents inactive nodes from being further rewarded. It is planned that a season restarts at 00:01 on the first day of a month.
The ranking of the nodes can be viewed on the pool website (https://pool.einfachiota.de/) and is updated at a fixed interval. Furthermore, IOTA community members can make a donation to the nodes via the menu item “Donate” on the website. At the time of writing 36 nodes have already registered.
How can I participate in the IOTA Community Node Pool?
In order to participate in the node pool, there are two additional requirements besides the obvious requirement to operate an IOTA node. Firstly, there must be an accessible API through the pool load balancers, and secondly, the API must be accessible via HTTPS and must have a valid SSL certificate.
For registering the node, there is an easy and quick way available on the pool website. On the register page, users can enter their node information in a form and will get a command generated, which can then be entered in the terminal window for the node.
The easiest way to operate an IOTA node is to use the HORNET node software. For example, it can be run on a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and newer. The following video shows how easy the software can be set up in less than 5 minutes.
