  • In an interview, Ethereum inventor Vitalik Buterin expressed his optimism that with the launch of multi-client test networks, the last big step before the launch of Ethereum 2.0 Phase 0 will be taken soon.
  • According to Buterin, multi-client test networks will very likely be launched in April.

As CNF reported, Least Authority announced last week the completion of the audit of the Ethereum 2.0 phase 0 specifications. The Least Authority team stated in a summary of the audit that pure Proof of Stake consensus protocols are a relatively unexplored field, which is why the audit focused on potential attack vectors.

In total, the company identified seven issues in the phase 0 specification and made three suggestions for best practices. Among other things, the team found critical flaws in the P2P messaging system and the protocol’s block proposer system. Vitalik Buterin, the inventor of Ethereum, recently commented on the audit and a possible impact on the launch of Ethereum 2.0.

In an interview with The Block, Buterin explained that the concerns of Least Authority are taken seriously and will be implemented in the long term. Regarding the two identified problems with information leakage in the block proposer system, Buterin stated that this problem is currently one of the main research priorities. According to Buterin’s roadmap for the next five to ten years, however, the Single Secret Leader Election (SSLE) mechanism will not be subject to obfuscation until Phase 2.

Regarding the possible spamming problem in the P2P messaging system, Buterin said that this problem was also present in the existing ETH 1.0 and required a lot of work to mitigate:

In general, we definitely take network security anti-spam seriously. Eth1 has taken some time to harden its network layer and there are currently a lot of eyes on networking issues so I expect DoS issues to be mitigated over time. Regarding BAR resiliency, I expect that the approach we’ll take will be to assume altruism at the beginning and then build in better incentive properties over time; the eth1 networking is also evolving in this direction.

Multi-client testnets to launch in April

As Danny Ryan stated after the Least Authority audit was published, the next step for Ethereum is to launch multi-client test networks and a phase 0 bug bounty programs. In the interview, Buterin explained that the launch will most likely take place in April, whereas a launch date for the mainnet cannot really be estimated yet:

The best way to think about when phase 0 mainnet launch will take place is, first we need a multiclient test net, then we wait for that testnet to run for some time without issues, and if it does then we launch. This is a similar procedure to what we did back in 2015 for eth1. So it is not easy to predict when mainnet will happen, though we absolutely expect multiclient test nets very soon; April seems very likely.
