- The IOTA Foundation wants to simplify the branding of its products and has renamed the first three products to make the complex technology easier to understand.
- Masked Authenticated Messaging (MAM) and components of Qubic were the first to receive a new brand name.
In the past, IOTA made it difficult for its supporters and investors to understand the already complex technology. The IOTA Foundation used names for many features, updates and new developments that could not be understood without a lot of research when you first heard them. For newcomers and even insiders of the crypto industry, names like Qubic, Chrysalis, GoShimmer, or MAM do not have much meaning at first and do not reveal what is behind the name.
As announced today, the IOTA Foundation wants to change this with immediate effect and has therefore announced in a blog post that it will simplify its product names in response to feedback from the community and its partners. According to the foundation, with Hornet and Bee, and the update of the protocol to Chrysalis, it is a good time to start this process.
To this end, the IOTA Foundation has established guiding principles. Firstly, IOTA is supposed to be present as the main brand, and secondly, all product names should aim to reflect the actual function of the product if it is aimed at the end user, as for example the Trinity wallet with the extension “wallet” does.
In addition, products should give developers as much information as possible about the function of the product. Last but not least, product names should also be based on other products outside the IOTA ecosystem, so that the naming is easier to understand. The first “old” products that will no longer exist are MAM and Qubic.
IOTA Streams, IOTA Smart Contracts and IOTA Access
IOTA Streams will replace the previous Masked Authenticated Messaging. MAM is a multifunctional layer 2 protocol that can be used for different types of data transmission (e.g. streaming data). As the IOTA Foundation revealed, the protocol, which was previously known for anonymous data transactions on the IOTA Tangle, has been completely revised. A separate announcement on this is to follow “very soon”.
Formerly a part of Qubic, now a separate product, are the IOTA Smart Contracts. Regarding the renaming, the IOTA Foundation states:
Previously a sub-domain of the Qubic project, this will now be elevated to a flagship project to give it the deserved visibility. Smart contract functionality is one of the most requested features on IOTA.
The third new product in the bundle is IOTA Access. This is “a lightweight and highly flexible access-control framework and language for resource-constrained devices, such as embedded devices, that enable reliable and secure human-machine interactions”.
